March Miscellany... and Madness

Sorry about the slight delay in postings. Here is the run-down of my March
activities...

At the beginning of the month, the lovely Betty Chapin (fellow peds intern)
had a visit from her mother, and invited us all over for a killer home cooked
Eritrean/Ethiopean dinner.

In all honesty, the evening actually materialized when Henry Cheng caught
wind that Betty's mom was in town, and took it upon himself to invite us all
over to Betty's for dinner. This has actually become a little bit of a pattern...
We've invited ouselves over for the Super Bowl, the NCAA tournament, and
now that Betty's husband Jeff is refinishing their sweet deck out back, I'm
certain we'll be forcing ourselves upon them for summer grilling and lawn darts.

Excellent injera technique being displayed by Deb and Shon.

Deb, Shon, and C-Buck ate in unison the whole night.

Dr. Cheng looking supremely smug that he pulled off a self-invited event of
such high quality.

The master chef and her daughter. Betty's mom promised to make me dorowat
the next time she's in town.

March also contained a fair amount of basketball tournament action.

The Peds intermural basketball team made it to the playoffs in a commanding
position (see previous post.) But in an upset that left the basketball world
stunned, the team bowed out in the first round after falling prey to a bunch of
upstarts that relied on trickery and lucky shots to win the close game.

Our battle-weary warriors were still able to smile after the game. (L->R Geoff,
Seth, Frymoyer, C-Buck, Zyck, Cheng, and James)

To decompress after the bitter loss, we headed down the hill to Carl-on-Carl's
place and put down some consolatory brews and pizza.

C-Buck, Cynthia, and James strike a pose.

Me, Shon, Seth, and Tiki Torches.

Henry was not in a good mood after the loss. Betty didn't care.

In other March basketball news, the Badgers made a deep run into the NCAA
tournament.

I was working 12-hour shifts in the ER during their wins in the first two rounds,
but I headed out to Berkeley to watch the Sweet Sixteen match-up with fellow
Wisconsin alums, Jess and Dave.

Out here in California we Wisconsinites have to stick together...

...even if it does mean enduring an occasional purple-nurple.

The Badger's thrilling victory over NC State was cause for celebration. To mark
the occasion, Dave unleashed the cannons for a 21-(thunder)gun salute...

The burger didn't even have a chance...

Go Badgers! (and sore nipples...)

Unfortunately, the Badgers lost during the Elite Eight. I did go to Anu's house
to watch Illinois play North Carolina in the finals. Somehow I lost all the pictures
from this, except for this one of Henry and Anne.

Flood (a friend from Whitewater High School days) came out to SF to visit for a
one night shebang.

We met up with fellow WHS alums Brooke Schauder and Jenny Wildermuth at
Cafe du Nord. We saw the end of the show there and then headed to SOMA to
meet up with some of the peds crew at some club/lounge type place.

We had almost the entire place to ourselves, and proceeded to dance each other
into a frenzy.

Dance Chris! Dance Betty! Dance Brian! Dance Geener! Dance Anu!

Ritu and James cut a rug. I think it interesting how Flood eluded the lens of the
camera the whole evening. He must have performed a Ninja Vanish move numerous
times throughout the evening.

Here C-Buck masterfully throws down the an old classic, the-broken-elbow-
pendulum-swing. A true master practices his craft.

Speaking of masters practicing their craft...

I include that picture as retribution, only because the whole evening Jenny teased
me by saying that I do the "token-white-guy-lip-bite" when dancing. I got self-
conscious about it, but realized that I only do it when laying down the really difficult
moves. I think she only brought it up because she was jealous of my dance-floor
prowess. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of me causing a nuclear war on
the dance floor that night. But if you've perused past postings, perhaps you remember...

...THIS!!!

Jog your memory? ...No? ...Well how about...

THIS!! (Still voted by discerning viewers as... The... Best... Dance... Move... Ever.)

Needless to say, my moves that evening had the typical effect on the females in
attendance.

(These pictures just for another little reminder)

Today I was tired and post call, but I took advantage of the beautiful day and
went out to Land's End and hiked along the northwest tip of SF.

Even though I've been here for almost a year, I still get excited when I see
the Golden Gate Bridge. Can't slip out of tourist mode.

Looking west towards Japan.

More bridge...

I hopped off the trail and walked up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor which
houses an art museum with a cast of Rodin's "The Thinker" in the the courtyard.

Some guy on a horse looking over the Golden Gate.

Anyway, more fun to come...
